This piece is essentially an elaboration of lip-slur exercises (where each exercise takes place on a different harmonic). It is also theatrical, visual and humorous. The performer is encouraged to play up these aspects as far as possible.
The demands on range are intentionally extravagant. It is extremely important that the low pedal notes are played with a very full and round sound (almost like a bass trombone). A good technique for achieving the extremes of range can be found in The Balanced Embouchure by Jeff Smiley, a didactic work that revealed to me the full tessitura of the instrument.
