Fantasia for Orchestra

Written in 1991, this piece definitely falls into the category of ‘juvenilia,’ but it was, nevertheless, an important staging post for me. Writing at a time when I had not formally studied any techniques of formal composition, I somehow cobbled together a reasonably effective 5-minute orchestral work which even had the audacity, after a brief introduction, to launch into an 8-part fugal exposition. Though barely aware of it at the time, motivically the work grows quite effectively from the opening idea.

The work was performed several times by the Dyfed County Youth Orchestra, was awarded the Grace Williams Memorial Prize and Eisteddfod Scholarship at the Urdd Eisteddfod and the S4C/SW Electricity Schools Composition Competition Prize.
