Oppositions I

The first of my pieces exploring the abrupt juxtaposition of contrasting thematic material. The idea was borrowed from a friend who wrote a striking work with the same title, which was played on a National Youth Orchestra of Wales summer course. It also chimed with my interest in works by Stravinsky, Tippett and William Mathias that use similar techniques (e.g. Symphony of Wind Instruments; Piano Sonata 2; Helios respectively). It was played in a workshop performance at University of Surrey. The score is in a box somewhere in my parents’ house. It probably does not warrant a revival…
